Biography

A Silicon Valley veteran, Rich Miller designed and implemented some of the first computer messaging and computer conferencing systems for the ARPAnet in the early 1970s. He cofounded InfoMedia Corporation (the first commercial computer conference service), founded Rapport Communication (a consultancy specializing in electronic messaging, directory systems, and network security), and was the executive vice president of General Magic's communication technology business unit and its vice president of business development.

In 1994, Miller became principal and senior consultant of Breo Consulting and oversaw the formation and funding of technology companies that provide security applications, wireless network infrastructure technologies, and service infrastructures for networked services. During his career, Miller has focused primarily on early stage and emerging technology companies, but has also been a lead consultant for technology and commercial projects that developed new lines of business for AT&T, IBM, Palm Computing, and NeuStar.

Miller has a distinguished history in technical standardization and industry formation. He was active in Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) and Internet standards as a contributor to messaging, directory, and security standards. He was instrumental in creating the Electronic Messaging Association, of which he was chairman from 1988 to 1990. For the past 15 years, he has honed his interest and skills in networked technologies, strategic marketing, and commercial strategy for new companies and new lines of business.

In early 2004, he co-founded Univa Corporation (www.univa.com) with Steve Tuecke, Ian Foster, and Carl Kesselman, and served as the company's COO until leaving in July 2006 to devote full time to a new technology startup in Silicon Valley.

In October 2007, he joined Replicate Technologies Inc. as its CEO. Together with Ken Novak and Rich Pelavin, the company's co-founders, he is directing RT's efforts to deliver a new class of management technology for the networks that support virtual machine environments (VMEs).

Miller graduated with a B.A. in political science and an M.A. in information science and communication research from Stanford University, where he also undertook doctoral studies in information science.
